GASA Baker’s Best is a Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) cooperator of the Department of Science and Technology Region (DOST) Region XI through its Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) in Davao Occidental since 2015. To help the  enterprise and their personnel to appreciate the current good manufacturing practices the DOST through its provincial office in Davao Occidental in cooperation with the Davao Food Safety Team, Inc. (DFST), conducted an in-house Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Awareness Seminar at GASA Baker’s Best on November 15, 2016 at Sta. Maria, Davao occidental. It was participated in by the firm’s fifteen (15) employees composed of the production supervisors, bakers, packers, delivery peddlers, refreshment supervisor, and the owner, Mrs. Celina Lambino.

The DFST resource speakers, Ms. Maria Geneva Depra and Ms. Lorenz Flordalyn Tolentino, discussed on topics which includes the importance of hand washing, food safety hazards, personal hygiene, preparation and storage of raw materials, production area cleaning and sanitation, and pest control. The resource speakers stressed in-house application of the topics to better practice GMP awareness especially since the firm is in the food sector. An orientation on the Food Safety Act of 2013 (R.A. 10611) for local dissemination and implementation was also given to the participants.

GASA Baker’s Best has been in the food manufacturing business for 10 years, and in its 2nd year under SETUP assistance. Their bakery product lines include monay, star bread, ensaymada, stick bread and other assorted breads and biscuits, marketed throughout the municipality of Sta. Maria.

This joint effort of DOST and DFST is aimed to increase the firm’s awareness on the standards of Good Manufacturing Practices and Food Safety. It is also aligned with the SETUP goal to provide assistance and interventions to micro and small enterprises to improve productivity and competitiveness through better product quality assurance.
