On its 4th year of implementation of the project entitled, “Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST)”, the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) in Davao Occidental continue to provide assistance to its beneficiaries in the municipality of Don Marcelino particularly, Brgy. North Lamidan.

 

To equip the men and women of Brgy.North Lamidan, the PSTC of Davao Occidental conducted a 3-day Bricks Making Training on November 16-18, 2016. Participants of the training include unemployed residents and pensioners of the barangay, barangay officials, and teachers from John Martin Johnson National High School. The training complements the livelihood/enterprise development and education components of the CEST program as implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Barangay North Lamidan in Don Marcelino is the beneficiary of the CEST project entitled, “Establishment of Pottery Center Common Service Facility”. The barangay was provided with 5 units potter’s wheel and 6 units metal brick moulds under the project.

The training aims to promote productive and sustainable livelihood for the people of Don Marcelino. The training also helped develop the skills of the teachers, particularly on Technology and Livelihood Education, in support to the Department of Education’s (DepEd) K-12 program.

04 Brick making

One of the participants was laying out moulded clay bricks for drying.

Mr. Marcelo Gascon, a clay pottery and bricks maker for 22 years from Davao Occidental, served as the trainer for the activity. The training includes lecture and demonstration on clay types and uses, as well as materials and equipment necessary for bricks making. Participants were trained on hands-on works on preparing bricks making work stations, clay mining and mixing, clay preparation and kneading, brick moulding, and proper drying and stacking of clay bricks. On the last day of training, the trainer also demonstrated basic pottery making to the participants.

The DOST CEST program is aimed to lessen poverty incidence at an acceptable level, and promote adoption and development of S&T-based enterprises in the municipality of Don Marcelino. Follow up training on Kiln Formation and Basic Pottery Making for the beneficiary is targeted for first quarter of 2017, under the 5th year of implementation of CEST project in Davao Occidental.
