For its first trip to Mindanao, the country’s first and only mobile science learning facility, the Science Explorer Bus, is set to take a road trip to Davao Occidental by February 2017. The Science Explorer Bus is under the program promotions of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). The Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) in Davao Occidental, together with a survey team from the DOST-SEI, conducted an ocular visit last November 24-26, 2016 to prepare the schedule and arrangements for the road trip to the 5 municipalities in the province.

The PSTC Davao Occidental and DOST-SEI team, in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) Davao del Sur Division Office and DepEd District Supervisors of Davao Occidental, namely Sta. Maria East and West, Malita North and South, Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos I and II, and Sarangani/Balut Islands, visited the potential schools or sites, with ample area size and traversable road, where the bus will accommodate learners from different schools. In coordination with DOST XII Office, the team also visited General Santos City ports to plan arrangements for the schools in Sarangani/Balut Islands.

The Science Explorer Bus project is targeted to cater the underprivileged or under-equipped schools in the provinces. It is aimed to provide a fun learning experience through cool and interactive experiments in the hope of inspiring students to pursue S&T courses in the future. It features a growing collection of exciting modules that promote hands-on learning of complex science and mathematics fields.

To further increase promotions for S&T education, the DOST-SEI will also conduct Push4Science Campaign for the high-school students. Currently, Davao Occidental has 6 scholars under RA 7687 Scholarship program. With the planned campaigns for next year, it is aimed to increase number of S&T scholars per municipality in the province by inspiring students to take up science courses in the college level, and convincing qualified students to apply for the scholarship programs.
