The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) successfully conducted a webinar entitled “Philippine-American Frontiers of Engineering”. In collaboration with the US National Academy of Engineering (US NAE) and the Philippine Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE), the webinar was simultaneously held last November 13, 2016 in Pasay City, Baguio City, and in the Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City.

With the topic, “From Centralized Innovation to Distributed Innovation – Catalyzing Regional Innovation Ecosystems across the Philippines”, all the speakers are distinguished members of U.S. NAE and PAASE including Dr. Fiorello B. Abenes of CalPoly University, California, USA; NAST Corresponding Member Dr. Joel L. Cuello of the University of Arizona, USA; PAASE President Dr. Gonzalo C. Serafica; and Academician Alvin B. Culaba.

One of the speakers, Dr. Joel L. Cuello, discussed the topic “Leveraging Distributed Zones of Global STE Companies across the Philippines”. He likened the STE Innovation Ecosystem to a rainforest ecosystem. A rainforest needs soil, sunlight, variety of plant and animal species, and more to survive, while the STE Innovation Ecosystem needs a variety of technology products and services to thrive.

“The economic value that science and technology creates, represents high return on investment which results in economic growth and national competitiveness,” Dr. Cuello said.

The Webinar was co-organized with the DOST Cordillera Administrative Region, and DOST Region XI and was participated by engineering professionals and practitioners.
