The Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) held a seminar on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for the members of Lumiad Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative (LUFAMPCO) at the Lumiad Barangay Hall, Paquibato District, last November 10.

Eva Jean Villaceran, Sanitary Inspector of the City Health Office, conducted the lectures on personal hygiene and raw materials. Stressing the importance of basic hand washing, Ms. Villaceran noted that soap and water should always be used as some germs are resistant to alcohol and hand sanitizer.

Michael Casas, a faculty staff of the Philippine Science High School, lectured on food safety hazards, cleaning and sanitation, and pest control. He highlighted the Rodent Control Principle, noting that the most effective way to control rodents is to separate them from food supplies to force them to migrate.

Both Villaceran and Casas are members of the Davao Food Safety Team, a pool of experts coordinated by the DOST XI, which provides trainings on GMPs, food processing, plant lay-out consultancy, and other related services.

Barangay Lumiad is one of the areas in Paquibato District targeted by DOST’s Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program in partnership with the 27th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army for the development of a cacao processing facility.

Last year, DOST XI conducted food pack distribution in the area and provided solar street lights and solar photovoltaic (PV) system to serve as an emergency power source.

“Kailangan ampingan ang mga produkto para safe, hinlo ug dili ma-contaminate ang mga pagkaon,” Anabelle Villacorta, a LUFAMPCO member, said. (We need to take good care of the products so that the food will be safe and clean.)

LUFAMPCO President, Celso Bughao Jr., expressed his gratitude, “Nagpasalamat ko sa DOST sa ilahang gihatag na oportunidad sa panginabuhian labi na sa CEST project nila nga panghatag ug chocolate and tablea processing sa amoang kooperatiba”. (I thank DOST for the livelihood opportunity they gave especially through their CEST Project which provided chocolate and cacao processing facilities for our cooperative.)

“Dako kaayo ni siya ug ikatabang sa among cooperative para sa additional nga panginabuhian sa among mga miyembro. Dako ni siya nga impact sa komunidad para mahatagan natog oportunidad ang ubang mga miyembro nga maka-gain ug trabaho,” he added. (This is a big help to our cooperative for the additional livelihood of our members. This will have a big impact in the community as this would give them the opportunity to gain jobs.)
