In high hopes of creating and promoting a healthy and safe working environment for its employees, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) partnered with Synerquest Management Consultancy Services, Inc. to provide its Quality Managers and RSTL personnel with the Quality, Environment, Safety, and Health (QESH) Management System training.

With 34 participants from DOST Regional Offices, the training aims to help them understand and grasp the philosophy, concepts, and benefits of an Occupational health and Safety Management System based on OHSAS 18001:2007. They are also expected to identify the hazards/risks and its implication to the environment, safety, and health.

Mirasol G. Domingo, Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Support Division of DOST XI, welcomed everyone in the two-day training held at the Grand Regal Hotel.

“I hope that at the end of the training DOST is not just synonymous to high quality service, but is also a safe and healthy working place for you and me,” she said.

Having a professional and credible trainer and mentor the entire training, it wouldn’t be that difficult to achieve. The DOLE Accredited OSH Consultant, Engr.Roberto C. Rubina, is the trainer and lead auditor/assessor of the QESH Management System. His wide knowledge coupled with his funny antics made the training even more enjoyable.

He also addressed misconceptions regarding the working environment.

“The reason why occupational health and safety (OHS) is often not given much importance in the office is because of the misconception that the office environment is free of hazard or risk,” said Donna Rose Ching, Science Research Specialist of DOST XI.

However, in whatever degree or nature of work an organization or company operates, there has to be a risk assessment so that hazard will be given attention and further cost in the organization is avoided,” she added.

The said training is only one of the four prepared trainings for the regional offices approved for funding by the Human Resources Development Program of DOST Central Office.
