The Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) has unlocked another achievement as its Food Processing and Innovation Center-Davao (FPIC-Davao) is among the 26 finalists for this year’s Government Best Practice Recognition (GBPR).

According to the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), out of the 73 entries received for this year, 26 entries passed the screening. These entries shall advance to the next stage which is the Presentation to the Panel of Judges on 22-23 October 2020.

The FPIC-Davao made the list with its entry entitled “Establishment of Food Processing Innovation Center-Davao as a Common Service Facility”, which highlighted three major best practices of the center – being the pioneer Food Innovation Center (FIC) in the Philippines, having synergistic multiagency collaboration, and its outstanding compliance to legal regulatory and statutory requirements.

The Center, established in 2014, is a collaborative undertaking of the DOST XI, Philippine Women's College (PWC) of Davao, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) XI, and Food Processors Association of Davao (FPAD), Inc. It is the first ever food innovation center (FIC) in the Philippines. It serves as a hub for innovations, and support services for value-adding of fresh produce and development of processed foods in Davao region.

Through the Center, innovative technologies, relevant support services, technical expertise, necessary infrastructures and facilities are more accessible for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the urban centers and countryside for a more effective technology application, deployment (transfer), and commercialization for sustained economic growth and productivity.

The establishment of FPIC-Davao being one of the projects pioneered and implemented by DOST XI has become significant as it is considered as the ideal and recommended innovation center to be followed by some regional FICs established in the following years.

DOST XI Regional Director Dr. Anthony C. Sales, CESO III expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders and partners of FPIC-Davao for reaching another milestone.

“Congratulations to DOST XI, FPIC, Inc. Philippine Women’s College, DTI, Davao City LGU, FPAD, Inc. and all our partners on this milestone! Looking forward to greater service to our people in Mindanao!” Sales said.

The Government Best Practice Recognition (GBPR) 2020 is an initiative of DAP to promote, showcase and share knowledge on outstanding and innovative practices demonstrated by the public sector organizations.
