The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Offices X, XI and XIII in partnership with the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) conducted the NRCP Science and Technology Expert’s Pool (NSTEP) Mindanao Cluster I – Membership Promotion Caravan on March 9, 2021, via Zoom platform.
DOST XI Regional Director and NRCP Member, Dr. Anthony C. Sales, CESO III said the objective of the activity is to provide a mechanism to identify highly competitive researchers, scientists, and engineers (RSEs) and to develop a regional network of experts’ pool to translate more equitable Research and Development (R&D) spending to other parts of the country.
Dir. Sales stressed that as of September 2019, the NRCP has a total of 4,464 members, of which around 52% are concentrated in the National Capital Region and Region IV-A hence, the participation of new members from other regions are considered and given priority.
“We hope to encourage HEIs and SUCs to take part in this opportunity for exchange of ideas and to stimulate a culture of development and communication and allow each member of the science community to incorporate all these learnings to achieve our ultimate goal of accelerating Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI) research for a better, healthier, stronger, resilient, and unified Philippines,” Dir. Sales said.
Over 400 participants composed of researchers from different Higher Education Institutes (HEIs), State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), and other institutions across Mindanao joined the virtual event which was also streamed through Facebook.
One of the highlights of the activity was the discussion of the NRCP National Integrated Basic Research Agenda (NIBRA) by NRCP Executive Director, Dr. Marieta Bañez Sumagaysay who was represented by Ms. Kaye Yambao. She emphasized the six issue-based programs of NRCP under its NIBRA which is anchored to the Harmonized National R&D Agenda. The results of these research priorities can be used as an evidence for policy making.
The sharing of personal experiences of NRCP Mindanao Regional Cluster members, Dr. Ephrime B. Metillo (Chairperson), Dr. Lesley C. Lubos (Auditor), and Dr. Marites B. Sanguila (Treasurer) were also highlighted during the activity. The three member-researchers shared their journey in the field of R&D and how NRCP helped them to enhance their research capabilities as NRCP members. Through the activity, they were able to inspire and encourage more researchers in Mindanao Cluster I (Davao, Northern Mindanao and Caraga).
