DAVAO CITY – The Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI), through the Davao City Science and Technology Center (CSTC), is set to provide Science and Technology (S&T) assistance to two Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) in Paquibato District to help alleviate poverty.
Davao CSTC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 7, 2021 with the Local Government Units (LGUs) of Barangay Paquibato Proper and Barangay Lumiad , and the 27th Infantry Action Battalion, 10th Infantry Agila Division, Philippine Army for the implementation of the Community Empowerment Through Science and Technology (CEST) Project in the two areas.
Under the MOU, DOST XI will be providing interventions that would address the socio-economic bottom lines of the beneficiary communities especially in the five development areas namely, Economic Development, Health and Nutrition, Human Resource Development, Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation, and Environment Protection and Conservation.
The implementation of the project includes the conduct of livelihood trainings, provision of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials related to community-based disaster management, and augmentation of supplementary feeding for the identified malnourished children. Deployment of a telehealth device called RxBox, was also done for Brgy. Paquibato, while installation of Solar PV Units for disaster response will be provided to Brgy. Lumiad, in partnership with the Ateneo de Davao University- Mindanao Renewable Energy Center.
Meanwhile, the LGUs of Paquibato Proper and Lumiad will safekeep all facilities, equipment, tools and fixtures from the project funds for sustainability of the livelihood and entrepreneurial activities even beyond project completion. The 27th IB on the other hand, will provide technical and logistical assistance for community preparation and social mobilization to ensure community-driven development.
The signing was led by Davao CSTC Director, Mr. Arnel M. Rodriguez, Barangay Captain Celso C. Bughao of Lumiad, Barangay Captain Mel Joseph P. Escobidal of Paquibato Proper, and 27th IB Battalion Commander, LTC. Victorino M. Seño at the Conference Room of Barangay Paquibato, Davao City.
