Variation of Oyster Meat Production Introduced

through DOST XI Technology Training

The Balasinon Oyster Farmers' Association (BOFA), a women's organization in the province of Davao del Sur, was introduced to new ways of processing their oyster meat into various innovative food products through different technology trainings conducted by the Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) through its Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) in Davao del Sur.

In partnership with Cor Jesu College-Br Polycarp iComDev Foundation Inc. and the Municipal Agriculture Office of Sulop, DOST XI assisted in completing four different technology trainings held in the Food Processing Innovation Center at the Philippine Women's College (PWC), Matina, Davao City.

The two-day training was spearheaded by members of the DOST XI Food Safety Team, Mr. Bince Crieta and Ms. Hazel Prevendido. They conducted a Techno Demo on dried oysters, training on manufacturing vacuum fried oyster chips, producing ready-to-eat oyster adobo and ready-to-cook oyster nuggets.

The president of BOFA, Ms. Erlyn Turtor, hopes that the conducted training and demonstrations will serve as a stepping stone towards expanding their oyster meat products into new markets and further improve their profit.

This initiative is part of DOST XI's Community Empowerment through Science and Technology intervention in Davao del Sur to empower women and marginalized communities and contribute to the attainment of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals on decent work and economic growth.
