 DOST XI kicks off pre RSTW festivities with back to back activities

The Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) officially commenced its pre-Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) festivities through the conduct of back-to-back events aimed to benefit students, and rural health units, respectively.

DAVAO ORIENTAL– The Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) continues to lead the way in battling the adverse effects of climate change and strengthening the disaster preparedness of the people in Davao Region. Through its Provincial Science and Technology Center in Davao Oriental (PSTC DO), DOST XI successfuly conducted the Training on Breadfruit Propagation and Seedling Distribution at the Municipal Hall, Tarragona, Davao Oriental on October 7, 2021.

The activity was participated by key personnel from the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), the Municipal Mayor's Office and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources (MENRO) of Tarragona Davao Oriental who spearheaded the propagation of breadfruit in their locality.

DAVAO DEL SUR – With the aim of promoting the safety and quality of food products as well as to help small food processors earn the trust of consumers, the Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI), through its Provincial Science and Technology Center in Davao Del Sur (PSTC DS) and in collaboration with the Provincial Governor’s Office-Public Employment Service Office (PGO-PESO), conducted a Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) Awareness Seminar for Sta. Cruz Seaweed Processors at Lawis Bato, Sta. Cruz Davao del Sur last September 29, 2021.

Experts from the Davao Food and Safety Team – Ms. Eva Jean Villaceran, RSI and Engr. Harleen Moya U. Jao, trained a total of 36 seaweed processors on topics such as the importance and principles of GMP in all facilities , how to lessen waste in their production, and many more.

DAVAO OCCIDENTAL- Empowering communities, especially those in geographically isolated and depressed areas (GIDAs), thru sustainable livelihood is one of the flagship programs of the Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI).  Through its Provincial Science and Technology Center in Davao Occidental (PSTC-Davao Occidental), DOST XI conducted various technology trainings for the Demolok Valley NHS Community Association and the Demolok Valleys Women last September 15, 2021 in Brgy. Demolok Valley, Malita, Davao Occidental.

Uniformed men and the civilians met for a common cause to fight against malnutrition in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) of Kapalong, Davao del Norte. As a jumpstart, personnel from the 60th Philippine Army Infantry Battalion (60IB), the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), and members of the Council of Women (KCW) in the municipality actively took part in the Blended Training-Workshop on Meal Management and Safe Food Handling on August 24-26,2021. Virtual lectures were conducted in the morning while workshops and demonstrations were performed in the afternoon.  

“To fight malnutrition, we need accurate data, correct information, and innovative technologies”. This was underscored by Ms. Josie Gonzales, Science Research Specialist of the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI). Her team of experts taught the participants on Safe Food Handling, Meal Planning, Basic Nutrition Concepts, Food Buying, Food Storage and Preparation, and Food Costing and Control. They introduced Pinggang Pinoy which means healthy food plate for Filipinos.  It is a balance of macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats plus micronutrients such as minerals and vitamins that should be included in daily meals to attain a healthy diet.
